A Career at a Crossroads
In their heartfelt note, Raj and DK recounted the difficult period leading up to Stree. Just days after the release of their film A Gentleman on August 26, 2017, the filmmakers found themselves at a low point. Facing two consecutive box office failures, they feared for their future in the industry. “Typically, this type of situation means the end of a filmmaking career,” they wrote.
However, it was during this challenging time that inspiration struck. Raj shared how a childhood memory from his hometown of Tirupati, where walls were often marked with the phrase “O Stree, Kal Aana” to ward off an urban legend, sparked the idea for Stree. This led to the concept of gender reversal in the story, where men are the ones afraid to go out at night.
The Making of Stree
Raj and DK dove deep into the creation of Stree, combining their love for unique storytelling with a desire to push genre boundaries. They drew from personal experiences, childhood fears, and small-town life to craft a script that was completed in just three weeks. The duo described how a small coffeeshop in Andheri West, which later became their temporary office, played a crucial role in the development of the film.
As production began, the filmmakers faced numerous challenges, including assembling a cast and crew willing to take a risk on the unconventional project. Despite these hurdles, Stree was shot on a modest budget in the small town of Chanderi, where the team bonded over shared experiences and late-night games of the Mafia.
A Phenomenon Against All Odds
Released on August 31, 2018, Stree defied expectations and became a cultural phenomenon. Raj and DK credited the film’s success to their decision to stay true to their roots and make the kind of films they believed in. The success of Stree marked the beginning of a new chapter for their production company, D2R Films, leading to projects like The Family Man, Farzi, Guns & Gulaabs, and more.
As Raj and DK look back on the journey of Stree and the lessons learned, they express gratitude to everyone who supported them along the way. They stated that the film’s success would not have been possible without the failures and hardships they faced.
