Bringing together some of the brightest minds in the entertainment industry, the Bollywood Hungama OTT India Fest and India Entertainment Awards hosted numerous panels that covered a range of critical topics in the OTT domain. During the session “Co-existence of OTT and theatricals: done deal or work in progress?” popular faces like Jim Sarbh, Taha Shah Badussha, Kritika Kamra, Sayani Gupta and Adarsh Gourav shared their thoughts. During the discussion, Taha and Jim shared insightful perspectives. Taha Shah Badussha likened OTT and theatrical releases to a “married couple,” stating that while they may have differences, they ultimately coexist as integral parts of the entertainment ecosystem.

“OTT and theatrical releases are like a married couple,” said Taha Shah Badussha. “They might have some differences between them, but at the end of the day, they are one. Theatres cater to the masses, needing a specific kind of setup, while OTT platforms are more niche, targeting a specific kind of audience. The convenience of OTT lies in the ability to watch content anytime, anywhere, on a mobile device.”
Jim Sarbh, intrigued by the characterization of OTT as niche, probed further, asking, “What do you mean when you say niche for OTT? Is it specifically in reference to web shows made in India, or do you view OTT as a niche space overall?”
Taha clarified his viewpoint, explaining that OTT platforms curate content for more targeted audiences. “They create content with specific demographics in mind. Content they create. They target a niche audience. There is a show, Keeping Up With Kardashian. If you and I might not be watching that show, but I do know that a lot of women watch that show. As far as if you look at commercial films, I’m not saying that theatrical films don’t target certain kinds of audiences, but again, I’m saying that it’s a mass audience like, let’s say Stree 2 for example. It’s not a niche film.”
Taha also highlighted how films like Stree 2 benefit from the synergy between OTT and theatrical releases. “It’s a commercial film and commercial elements which broke records and surpassed anybody’s understanding of what a film can do. I wouldn’t call it a small budget film, but I would call it a medium budget film which broke all records and sometimes even the biggest budget films make nothing. Those films, after a month or two, come on to OTT and then get the next boost, or a catalyst, to reach more audiences across the globe. Not only that, but they also get languages dubbed, so therefore you get more audiences to watch in the dump languages. So it’s a benefit when they coexist.”
