EXCLUSIVE: Kaagaz 2 actress Smriti Kalra on being a Hypnotherapist, “It was for understanding and educating myself more”

Not many people know that Smriti has not only studied Journalism and did an MBA, but she is also a Clinical Hypnotherapist. During an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama when she was asked how she got interested in hypnotherapy, she was pleasantly surprised to see this writer having researched about that.

Answering the question, Smriti said, “I was noticing a pattern about life. There is a pattern in all our lives. You feel why am I doing something in a particular way. I enjoy studying about human brain. It’s crazy; no matter how much you read it, it’s so fascinating. There are a couple of things I had noticed about myself.”

She continued, “I got to know that this is a pattern. Now what do I do about it? I could do whatever little I had to do about it and take help if I had to. The best thing is to educate yourself about it. With that thought in my mind, I started studying. I like to delve into child psychology. As we all know, most of our things are derived from childhood. That is like a seed. If it gets good nurturing, it will turn out to be a happy plant. If an insect bites it, one leaf will be destroyed. It started from there. That is why I started reading it, I studied it and I really enjoyed. But I don’t practice it. I don’t do hypnotherapy sessions on others. Primarily it was for understanding and educating myself more.”

Although Smriti started acting in 2009, she didn’t like to be referred to as an actor for years after that. “Till 2018, I used to refuse calling myself an actor,” she said. When she was asked the reason for this, she said, “I really don’t know. Probably because of the educational or the family background I was brought up in. I kept getting away from acting but every time I would come back. At times I used to take a break, but then something totally different used to come up and I used to do it as it would be challenging. Everyday my father would ask me, ‘What new did you read or learnt today?’ Even today morning he asked the same thing. So, this is the set up I have been brought up in. But in 2018, I clearly told my dad that I am an actress and this is what I will be.”

Smriti revealed that during her college days, she was interested in every extra-curricular activity and used to delve into things related to art. When she started studying journalism, she realized that she won’t get to learn much sitting inside the class. So, she started going internship. She soon became an RJ at Red FM. She then ventured into plays. This is how she got to know about the auditions for her debut television show 12/24 Karol Bagh.

“Earlier, my funda was to say yes to everything, which now I am not doing,” said Smriti. “I feel this funda is very useful in life. But my Red FM office was in Noida and the audition for Karol Bagh was in Lodhi Road. And I didn’t have a car. So, one of my office mates said he will drop me there. If he wouldn’t have given me a lift, I would have never been able to go into acting.”

Smriti plays Simi in the show but initially she didn’t show interest towards it. “Because I found it very boring (laughs),” she said. “My audition itself was so dukhi like, ‘Main Simi. Main moti hoon and blah blah blah.’ I said I don’t want to do this. I said I would want the role of the second sister. At that time, I didn’t know the concept of lead actor. So, the person took my audition for the other sister as well. But later on, he told me that he sent my audition about Simi to Zee TV and I got selected.”

As Smriti said before, she wasn’t sure about acting after Karol Bagh and hence, she didn’t come down to Mumbai, although the rest of the cast from the show did. She started traveling. Later on, she decided to come to Mumbai and lost weight. This is how she got her second breakthrough show Surveen Guggal for Channel V.

When asked about her future projects after Kaagaz 2, Smriti said honestly, “Talks are going on, but nothing has been signed on the dotted lines. I won’t lie like others that I have quite a few projects. If someone is making a nice project and if they need a kamaal ki actress, then they should contact me (laughs). I want to do good work. Years down the line I want my family and kids to see things they are comfortable watching. The reason I am not doing web is not because I am not getting anything. It is the kind of stuff I want to do. I want my kids to say, ‘Oh mom is rocking, she is cool.’”
