Bollywood actor Vicky Kaushal is all set to portray the legendary Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj in the upcoming historical epic Chhaava. In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, he revealed the rigorous training and dedication required to bring the character to life.

Vicky’s transformative journey
Speaking about the physical transformation, Kaushal shared, “In terms of physicality, I had to gain 25 kgs of weight and be muscular.” The actor also delved into the film’s demanding action sequences, stating, “The director was very clear that you have to learn to ride a horse, I will not compromise on it.” Along with horse riding, he had to master the art of sword fighting. “You should be able to handle the sword as your right hand. Pata nahin lagna chahiye ki tum ladh rahe ho ki naach rahe ho,” he explained, stressing the importance of authenticity in battle scenes.
Seven months of intense training
Kaushal revealed that preparing for the film became a full-time commitment. “For six to seven months, preparation for this film was a full-time job for me—gyming, eating, horse riding, everything was done regularly.” He further added, “You don’t have a social life. You are on the bed by 8:30 and awake by 4 AM. This was seven months straight before we started shooting.”
Vicky on embodying history
Beyond the physical demands, the actor also immersed himself in understanding the historical and cultural depth of his character. “There was a lot of preparation about understanding the history. It is not just about wearing costumes or looking like the part, it is about feeling the situation.” He elaborated on the importance of absorbing the essence of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj’s life and values, saying, “It was about learning the history, sanskriti, values. Jab tak woh andar nahin daaloge, it won’t help.”
