Amitabh Bachchan and Rajinikanth are set to reunite on screen in the Tamil action thriller Vettaiyan, marking a significant moment in their careers after 33 years since their collaboration in Hum (1991). At the recent audio launch of Vettaiyan, Rajinikanth took the opportunity to reflect on Amitabh’s remarkable journey.

Rajinikanth spoke of the challenges Amitabh faced, including a period of immense financial strain that saw him working tirelessly for up to 18 hours a day. Rajinikanth painted a vivid picture of Amitabh during those tough times, describing how he accumulated significant debt yet remained unwavering in his dedication to his craft.

Rajinikanth also recounted the time in Amitabh’s life, and how the actor chose to step back from the limelight at the height of his fame to seek solitude. Big B then returned to the industry, this time with the ambition of establishing his own production company, Amitabh Bachchan Corporation Limited (ABCL). Unfortunately, the venture did not succeed as planned, leading to a financial crisis that forced Amitabh to sell properties, including his cherished residence in Juhu. Rajinikanth noted the cruel irony of how some within the film community reacted to Amitabh’s misfortunes with indifference or even celebration.

Rajinikanth narrated how Amitabh, devoid of the luxuries he once had, walked to Yash’s residence wearing a simple cap, having lost his driver due to financial constraints. “One day, he walked to Yash Chopra’s house wearing a monkey cap because he no longer had a driver as he couldn’t pay them. He asked Yash for work. Yash immediately brought a signed cheque and gave him, but Amit ji declined saying he will take it only if he is given work. And thus he received Mohabbatein. Soon, he also got KBC,” Rajinikanth recalled.

Rajinikanth lauded Amitabh’s work ethic during this challenging phase. “He did anything and everything,” Rajinikanth stated. “He did all kinds of ads. People in Bombay industry again laughed seeing this. For three years, despite having many health issues, he worked for 18 hours a day and cleared all his dues. Not just that he bought back the old house, he bought a total of three houses in that same lane. That’s Amitabh Bachchan! He is 82 now and still works for 10 hours a day.”

Vettaiyan releases in cinemas on October 12.
