Known to be one of the biggest blockbusters of Indian cinema, Munna Bhai redefined the image of popular star Sanjay Dutt and establishing him as one of the key actors in the world of comedy. As director Rajkumar Hirani opened up about his journey in cinema in the first episode of Komal Nahta’s podcast Game Changers, he also revealed fascinating anecdotes from his early career, including his debut directorial Munna Bhai MBBS, which not only became a commercial hit but also won the hearts of critics.

In the episode, Nahta asked Hirani whether the success of Munnabhai MBBS added pressure on him for future projects. The director humbly responded, “Yes. Regarding the first film, I don’t even remember if I thought about how much business it would do, or if people would even go to see it. I was just so happy that the film got made.” Hirani recalled a humorous and heartwarming moment from the film’s release. “The next day, I got a call from my assistant. He said, ‘Sir, let’s go see the film. What’s happening?’ When I reached, I asked the gatekeeper how the film was doing, and he gestured that it wasn’t good. But when I went inside and saw, people were enjoying it. Then I realized that his gesture didn’t mean ‘not housefull’.”
A pivotal moment came when Hirani took co-actor Boman Irani to see the film with an audience. “When we came outside, we saw the ‘Housefull’ sign,” Hirani recalls with a smile, reflecting on the unexpected success.
About Munna Bhai MBBS
Along with Sanjay Dutt, the film also featured the memorable character of Circuit played by Arshad Warsi. The film follows Munna Bhai, a don in the Mumbai underworld, trying to please his father by pretending to be a doctor, but when a doctor, Asthana exposes his lies and tarnishes his father’s honor, Munna enrolls in a medical college. Chaos ensues when Munna, upon finding that Asthana is the dean of the college, vows revenge, while also sparking a romance with a house doctor, Suman, unaware that she is his childhood friend and Asthana’s daughter.
